Elegant, balanced wines find their essence at the intersection of provenance, inspiration and artistry. Though a wine will only ever be as good as the vineyards it comes from, the wisdom of nature can be nurtured and gently accentuated. At Freeman, every wine is intimately made by hand in small lots. As many as 50 individual clonal fermentations are managed each vintage to make just six Pinot Noirs. The focus is exclusively on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and total production is kept below 5,000 cases to ensure that every bottling receives the love and attention it deserves.
While these acclaimed, limited-production wines are available in some of the finest restaurants around the world, and in select wine shops across the country, the only other way to acquire them is by becoming a mailing list member.
2021 Gloria Estate Pinot Noir
Gloria is Freeman’s estate vineyard, located adjacent to the winery. Ken and Akiko acquired this site—previously an apple orchard—from a neighbor in 2005 and planted it the following year. They named the vineyard for the orchard’s owner, Gloria, and especially for the fortuitous event that brought Ken and Akiko together in 1985. Ken had been on a sailboat heading south in the Atlantic when Hurricane Gloria forced him to spend the night in port. That evening he attended a friend’s party where he met Akiko—the best-dressed and most beautiful woman in the room. The rest, of course, is history.

2021 KR Ranch Pinot Noir
From 2004 through 2015, Freeman made a vineyard-designated Pinot Noir from Keefer Ranch in the Russian River Valley. When the Dutton family took over the management of this famous block in 2016, we came up with a new name for it: KR Ranch. The property sits in the center of the Green Valley, located in the southern and western parts of the Russian River Valley. This area is much cooler than those at the appellation’s northern end, so it is ideally suited to growing Pinot Noir.

2021 Ryo-fu Chardonnay
Ryo-fu is Japanese for “cool breeze,” a fitting name for this Russian River Valley Chardonnay shaped by the chilly winds that blow in from the Pacific Ocean. Our local ryo-fu, along with the region’s famous fog and sandy loam soil, create ideal growing conditions for this vineyard.

2021 Hawk Hill Chardonnay
When we first visited Hawk Hill in the early 2000s, we admired the vineyard’s proximity to Freestone and the cool influence of the nearby coast. The rolling hills where the vineyard lies are blanketed by morning fog and cooling afternoon winds, which allow the grapes to benefit from some of the longest hang times in California. Aside from the challenges of higher humidity due to the fog, the site is ideal for growing perfectly balanced Chardonnay. When the opportunity arose for Freeman to start working with Hawk Hill fruit, we jumped at the chance.

2019 Akiko’s Cuvée Pinot Noir
The 2019 Akiko’s Cuvée is the darkest wine of the vintage for Freeman. There’s so much going on with the aromas of this wine, it takes hours in a decanter or in the glass to decipher all the complexities. There’s the fruit forward notes of Gloria and KR, with deep berry, plums and floral scents. Then there are the more earth-driven aspects, like fresh herbs, forest floor and cola that come from Yu-ki and Pratt. On the palate, you’ll find the elegant mouthfeel we have come to expect from Akiko’s Cuvée. The balance between fruit and acidity is perfect. Enjoy this from 2022 through 2032.

2019 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
The 2019 Freeman Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is the one wine out of our six 2019 Pinots that benefits the most from aeration. When you first open it, the aromas are very earthy, with some cool climate reduction, often found in Burgundy and Oregon. After several hours in a decanter, the bright berry scents of the Sonoma Coast begin to emerge and combine beautifully with the more savory elements. The palate has an abundance of crunchy, ripe fruit with brilliant acidity and soft tannins. With a finish that goes on and on, expect this to be at its best between 2021 and 2030.

2019 Yu-ki Estate Pinot Noir
Yu-ki Estate Pinot Noir always has a dark ruby color, due to the high skin to juice ratio in the tiny Pinot Noir grapes that grow in this coastal site. The 2019 Yu-ki has aromas of brambly wild huckleberries, wet earth, forest floor, molasses, and chanterelle mushrooms. The palate is a seamless blend of perfectly ripe fruit flavors, moderate tannins, and refreshing acidity. Each year that the Yu-ki vineyard matures, the flavors get more complex, and the palate gets more structured. As with all great vineyards, the longevity of the wines increases as the vines get older. Enjoy the 2019 Yu-ki from 2022 through 2032.
